What are the components of Communication Satellites ? Add a note on the uses of communication satellites.
Communication Satellites are geostationary satellites orbiting the earth at 36ooo km above the equator. They provide four basic services - Telecommunication, TV broadcasting, Radio broadcasting and Weather forecasting. They provide value added services like Data relay, Early warning system, Search and rescue.
1. C-band transponder:
- It is used for transmitting telecommunication signaks and for transferring large data at high speed.
- Each transponder can handle 12,000 tele-communication channels simultaneously.
2. Upper extended C-band Transponder:
- It has a wider beam coverage than a normal C-band transponder.
3. Lower extended C-band Transponder:
- It has a narrow beam coverage than a normal C-band transponder.
4. S-band Transponder:
- It is used in TV and Radio broadcasting.
5. Ku band Transponder:
- It has double the capacity of C-band and also higher frequency than C-band.
- It caters exclusively to business networking and for internet service providers and satellite news gathering.
- It is also used for DTH services.
6. Mobile Satellite Service Transponder (MSS):
- It is a combination of C-band and S-band facilities.
- It provides communication facilities for sea-borne vessels, aircraft and moving vehicles with the earth stations situated on land.
7. Very High Resolution Radiometer (VHRR):
- It is used for weather forecasting.
- It provides data once in 3 hours and has a resolution of 2 km.
